The Meridien: This couldn’t have a finer address – 1 Promenade des Anglais – it’s in the very heart of the city and ideal for the Old Town as well as the beach. Phone 049 703 4444.
The Windsor: Many rooms are designed by artists, there are Tintin posters galore and a lift that emulates a rocket launch. Breakfast in summer is in the gardens of this centrally located hotel. Tel: 049 388 5935.
Hôtel Lafayette: In the very heart of Nice, very near the Place Masséna and the Galeries Lafayette. It claims to be small and friendly and that's just as we have found it. The rooms are a decent size for such reasonable rates.
The Busby: This hotel is near the Windsor on rue Marshall Joffre and has an atmosphere of the belle epoque. Tel: 049 388 1941.
Being a heavily tourist-based city, it is easy to find budget accommodation in Nice, from small hotels to youth hostels, all of which are perfectly comfortable, and usually at a very decent rate that leaves you more to spend on your city break.
With low-price hotels and hostels all over Nice you should have no problem finding something that suits you. Nice caters well for budget travellers, from basic hostels to luxury villas. The mid- range varies from functional, but pretty dull, apartment blocks to a few first-rate bargain rooms in quiet residential areas near the city centre.
The high season poses a problem as rooms can fill up quickly, so it's best to book well in advance. Indeed, turning up without booking ahead at any time in the high summer would be most ill-advised.
